Five (5) Places in The Northern Region of Ghana for “Semi Adventurous” Travellers



Travel is a way for the people to express their inquisitiveness and satisfy curiosity. If you’re someone who enjoys a considerable degree of adventure and a willingness to reach out and experiment with life, then the Northern Region of Ghana is an ideal place for you.

The Northern Region is endowed with the rich cultural heritage of the Northern people of Ghana. The region is divided into 26 districts with Tamale as its capital. It is located in the north of Ghana and is the largest of the ten regions in the country.

Although, the region does not boast of must-see sites like Paris or Rome, the joy of the Northern region, instead, are the unique nature of Savanna wildlife where you will find plenty of fulfilling activities from, scouting the Mole National park on foot safari to the crocodile ponds in Kulmasa.
Now, lets delve into the destinations.

  • Daboya

Daboya is located in the west Gonja district, about 60 km west of Tamale via the Nyamkpala/Tolon road. Daboya is perhaps one of the most unique craft villages in West Africa and holds a special place in the traditional textile industry of Ghana.

 It is a town known for smock (fugu) production involving the various stages of the process. You will learn about how traditional smocks are woven through the natural indigo dyeing, weaving and sewing processes and you will also try yourself.

Extend your time on a river in a 5 hour round trip. You can stop at a Crocodile Stone for a picnic lunch and relaxation and hear the legend of the stone.

  • Kulmasa

Kulmasa is located in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba dictrict 55km from Sawla. On the Wa-Kumasi highway. Kulmasa’s traditional myths and beliefs are centered on the crocodiles.

 This involve experiencing the cultural tradition of the people and how they co-exist in harmony with the crocodile. The people believe that the crocodiles “hold the souls of their members” and therefore co-habit with them.

Have a crocodile experience at the Kulmasa community and learn more about the crocodiles and the history of the people.

  • Mognori Eco-Village


Located 15km on the south eastern boundary of the Mole National park, the “Eco-village experience” involves experiencing cultural tradition in tune with nature in a truly unique “eco-village” in northern Ghana.

 You will learn bout and participate in the traditional healing methods, Shea butter processing, Gari processing and many more. There is also day and overnight canoe safari.

  • Sonyo

Sonyo is located 15km east of the district capital Bole on the Bole Senior High School road. Sonyo has a unique local architecture, build in the ancient times to protect the community from their enemies. Most of the household do not have entry point.
Most of the households are only accessible to each other by walking on top of the roof using traditionally manufactured ladder to ascend and descend into the household.


  •  Gwollu Slave Defence Walls


A prominent feature of Ghana ‘s National Slave Route. During the historic and infamous slave raids, the people of Gwollu created a place of refuse by constructing two circular wall which protected them and surrounding villages. You can view remnants of this important landmark as well as listening to the history of the slave trade in the Museum.

You can also pay your respect and learn about the inspiring life story of Gwollu favourite son, the Late Dr. Limann (Former President of Ghana), visit prominent shrines and finally witness traditional artisans at work.
